Strataderm is a rapidly drying, non-sticky, transparent, silicone gel formulation for the treatment of both old and new scars as well as abnormal scar prevention, in the form of hypertrophic scars and keloids.

When used as directed, Strataderm dries to form a silicone gel sheet, a protective layer that is gas permeable and waterproof which hydrates and protects scars from chemical and microbial invasion, allowing scars to normalise the collagen synthesis cycles, producing a normal mature scar.

FAQs

Strataderm is a topical silicone gel developed to support the management and appearance improvement of scars. It is commonly used on surgical, traumatic, or post-procedure scars once the skin surface has fully closed. The gel forms a thin, flexible layer over the scar that helps maintain hydration balance and protect the area from external irritation. By supporting an optimal environment during the scar maturation process, Strataderm may help improve the appearance of texture, colour, and overall smoothness over time. Consistent application is important, as scar appearance changes gradually across several skin renewal cycles. Last reviewed: February 2026

Silicone scar therapy works by creating a breathable, protective film that helps regulate moisture levels at the skin surface. Maintaining hydration balance is considered important during scar maturation because excessive dryness may contribute to visible thickening or uneven texture. The silicone layer also helps reduce friction and environmental exposure, supporting a stable healing environment. Rather than actively removing scars, silicone gels help optimise conditions that allow the skin’s natural remodelling processes to progress more evenly. Regular and prolonged use is typically recommended for best cosmetic outcomes. Last reviewed: February 2026

Apply a very thin layer of Strataderm to clean, dry skin once daily or as directed by a healthcare professional. Only a small amount is required, as the gel spreads easily and forms a transparent film after drying. Allow the product to dry completely before applying sunscreen, cosmetics, or clothing over the area. Consistent daily application helps maintain continuous barrier protection, which is important for supporting scar maturation. Reapply after cleansing if necessary to maintain coverage. Strataderm can be used on both recent and mature scars once the wound has fully closed and there are no open areas. New scars may benefit from early support during the remodelling phase, while older scars may gradually appear smoother or more even with continued use. Improvements occur slowly as skin renewal processes progress, so consistent application over several weeks or months is typically recommended. Individual results vary depending on scar type, age, and location. Last reviewed: February 2026

The silicone-based formulation is generally suitable for all skin types, including sensitive or reactive skin. Strataderm is non-comedogenic and designed to sit on the skin surface without blocking pores. Because it contains minimal active ingredients, it is often well tolerated when used as directed. Patch testing may still be advisable for highly sensitive individuals. Supporting barrier protection without irritation helps make the gel appropriate for long-term use during scar management routines. Last reviewed: February 2026
